This is just an idea, I'm not expecting much from it.
As a Pokemon fan I'm an obvious fan of battle threads, not exactly for the prize (Even though the prize is a sweet bonus) I like battle threads because is shows you a totally different side of a person's character and their Pokemon, and that's what I like to focus on.I'm sure all characters have specializations and different training styles so I figured how about we make that show in battles instead of depending on moves.
Some trainers prefer their Pokemon fast, some prefer strong ,smart etc and let's face it no two Pokemon of the same species fight in the same way. Although they have similar moves they use them differently with their personal traits just like humans would and the whole point of Pokemon is to show how similar to humans Pokemon are. So why don't we give Pokemon their own specializations similar to stats they can help in free form battles, giving more detail to battles and making sure everyone's signature training style is visible during battles. This would force people to try and work around another Pokemon Trainer's Training style instead of just fighting and depending on the Pokemon's move list, this could force strategy into the mix.
We could have a small template set up by whoever is willing that will deal with Pokemon traits or specializations and incorporate the Exp system in it. Let's say as a trainer you value speed in your Pokemon and your style of training your team is focused on speed. We will have 200 Skill points for each Pokemon to start with. The skill points are diveded into the trait or specialization sections in a manner that best describes your training style and how you want your Pokemon to handle battle.
This doesn't have to be the template its just to show you what I'm blurting on about.
Total Skill points [200]
Speed:
Strength:
Agility:
Durability:
Intelligence:
accuracy:
You can distribute the points however you see fit through these but how you do it would effect the battle even if the Pokemon your fighting against is stronger you might have a fighting chance. Let's say your opponent is Raichu and you have a Pikachu, your signature training style throught these specializations might help.
Pikachu specializations:
Total Skill points [200]
Speed:100
Strength:10
Agility:10
Durability:(you can get more as time goes for that slot)
Intelligence:30
accuracy:50
Raichu's Specializations:
Total Skill points [200]
Speed:50
Strength:100
Agility:20
Durability:20
Intelligence:
accuracy:10
In this situation it takes a little common sense and strategy to figure out that since you trained your Pikachu to be faster and more agile infact your Pukachu is twice as fast as the Raichu but the Raichu is Twice as powerful as your Pikachu. From there as a trainer you can see how best you use the advantage since the Raichu is way more powerful but less likely to hit you due to a mixture of your Pikachu's speed and the Raichu's lack of accuracy From there You can look into your moves list and Dish out some punichment Of course Keep in mind that you cannot face the Raichu head on due to its strength, Its hits are more likely to really pack a punch
These advantages and Disadvantages might add a little spice into the battles and force trainers to consider strategy first. As for how you can earn more Skill points well I don't know
