Roxanne lay on the sandy banks of a small river she had found in the forest. Her checkered sweater and blue jeans were folded neatly under her head to be used as a pillow. The orange haired girl looked over at her Squirtle who was also sprawled out in the sun. She enjoyed the company of her new friends but it was good to have a moment alone with her Pokémon. She sat up, pulling her knees to her chest, and looked around. She could see Magikarp swimming around in a circle just under the surface of the water. Above her two birds flew through the air occasionally squabbling over some berries. To her right a small purple rodent scurried around playfully.
Roxanne looked back at the water and noticed Magikarp flopping around. It seemed he was practicing his splash attack and he looked pretty frustrated. Roxanne felt bad knowing that Magikarp’s attack would be useless against his opponents. She pulled six pieces of rare candy out of her bag and threw one of them into the water. Plop. Magikarp gobbled it up with a little gulp and splashed around happily.
Looking up at her birds she had a sudden worry. “I’ve been thinking, back when it was just you and me it was OK for your name to be Squirtle. Now that we are out in the world it might get confusing if we run into any other Squirtles. And what if Spearow evolves? We’ll have two Fearows then…” Squirtle looked concerned, “Squirtle?” Roxanne smiled, “Don’t worry! I was just thinking I should probably give you all nicknames." Squirtle stood up excitedly waiting for a name. Roxanne thought for a moment. “How about… Dylan?” Squirtle almost fell over as he jumped up and down. “Alright,” Roxanne nodded, “Dylan it is.”
She looked around at her Rattata, “I think I will call you, Joel.” The little rat stopped chewing on the acorn it had found and looked up curiously. Roxanne laughed at the Pokémon’s confusion. She looked up in the air and the two bird Pokémon landed nearby. Both waited expectantly for their names. “Spearow, your name will be Janis. Fearow, your name will be Hendrix.” Janis let out a gravely “Speearow!” before taking off again. Hendrix followed her a few seconds later. One left Roxanne thought.
She moved down towards Magikarp, plopping another candy into the water, “I will name you Styx after the mythological river and one of the greatest bands of all time." Magikarp cocked an eyebrow at Roxanne, which was an impressive feat for a fish and Roxanne laughed, “Oh, have you never heard of them?” She pulled her Walkman out of her bag and attached a small pair of speakers. She played a song loud enough for the fish to hear.
