Heroes have only begun to surface across the world in the past fifteen years:
Metropolis has its Superman, leaping tall buildings in a single bound, and fighting the criminal element with the aid of his cousin Supergirl.
Star City has its own hero in Green Arrow, who walks a fine line between good and evil. To assist him in his quest of protecting the city is Red Arrow/Arsenal, Speedy, and Artemis.
Central City boasts about The Flash, the fastest man alive, being their champion against crime and injustice.
Because the world has had more than its share of danger and threats, The Justice League formed just a couple of years ago, with numerous heroes from diverse cultures and civilizations joining the ranks. Eventually, hero-sidekicks, under the leadership of the original Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson), organized themselves into a team of their own called The Teen Titans. It was also during this time that a new race of humans were being created or born with a Meta-Gene, which gave them super-powers when the gene became active. Labeled "Meta-Humans" by S.T.A.R. Labs, these individuals blended into society to produce powerful heirs.
The focus of chaos has been -- and seems like it will forever be -- Gotham City, with its newly anointed hero, Batman, as the symbol to all villains that causing trouble in his city is not a wise decision. At first, his fight was against the organized crime families of Gotham, and with this fight was an unspoken alliance with the police, led by Lt. James Gordon.
Soon, Batman's world was changed by the revelation of a League of Shadows that would introduce chaos to cities all over the world to further their leaders' goals. (Those leaders are Ra’s Al Ghul and daughter Talia.). The Dark Knight then created his own worst enemy, The Joker, and has been dealing with him ever since. As Batman's rogues increased in number and Harvey Dent became Two-Face, the politicians officially broke ties with Batman and attempted to hunt him down. Furthermore, the bond with Jim Gordon strengthened and became more discreet. Batman also gained an unexpected partner when Dick Grayson witnessed his parents' death and became Robin, the Dark Knight's sidekick, to help combat the ever-growing evil consuming Gotham.
As other villains like Riddler, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and The Mad Hatter came into existence, Batman and Robin battled them to keep peace for the citizens of Gotham. The more villains that arrived on the scene, the more strained his relationship became with the politicians. His abilities were unquestioned, and his reputation spread, becoming a true symbol of good. He even took on another sidekick, Batgirl, to help him and Robin.
After several years together, the relationship between Batman and Robin strained to the point of fracture. Robin moved on to become Nightwing and onto his own city to protect. As that partnership ended, another began. The politicians ended their hunt for Batman. Gotham continued to spiral out of control as super-villains increased in number and violence. So, they chose instead to embrace the Dark Knight's presence and seek his help whenever possible by promoting James Gordon to Commissioner, as well as install a formal Bat Signal to the top of Gotham City Police Headquarters.
Today, Batman fights crime all over the world -- either on his own, with his former partner Nightwing (having patched the relationship since the months he left), as a part-time member of the Justice League, or with other heroes of the world. Likewise, the other heroes of the world visit Gotham to assist the Dark Knight and his allies.
